I’m very excited to see what Marvel and DC are doing with female superheroes both in movie and on TV. Loving Agent Carter but I’m really wanting Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D to come back, I want to know more about Skye being Daisy Johnson/Quake.

These are some pictures that I found online while looking for stuff for other blog posts. They are just funny or interesting pictures that I thought were cool but did not fit with what I was writing. Please enjoy!!!!!

The Birds of Prey are a DC comics group of superheroines, that came together after Batgirl got paralyzed and became Oracle.

Superheroine movies have  not been very good in the past. Movies like Catwoman with Halle Berry did not really have much to do with the DC comics that the name came from. This video Gives part of a review two boys did for this movie.

catwoman_halle_berry

Another movie based on a Superheroine is Elektra with Jennifer Garner playing the main character. The movie mixes magic and ninjas and is kind of confusing. Here is a review of Elektra.

Elektra  The actress playing these superheroines are good actress in their own right but the story lines that go in to these movies and the special effects just ruin the movies.

Which Superheroine do think needs their own movie?

Superheroines vs. Superheroes pt 2

Some issues that will be brought up; which is better superheroines or superheroes, which is stronger, smart, more violent, and more protective, and why do male superheroes get their own live-action movie more than female superheroes.

superhero-movie-montage

Now obviously there are many different types of superheroes and superheroines, and that will be taken into consideration when comparing them. These three battles are about fighting skills, strength, and power, along with weaknesses. These battles show one gender doing better than the other.

Superman and Supergirl vs. Batman and Batgirl

batmansuperman

In this battle, Batman and Batgirl fight Superman and Supergirl. Although Batman and Batgirl ultimately lose the battle they do have an edge over Superman and Supergirl. Which is Kryptonite, “Kryptonite is a fictional material from the Superman mythos—the ore form of a radioactive element from Superman’s home planet of Krypton. It is famous for being the ultimate natural weakness of Superman and most other Kryptonians, and the word Kryptonite has since become synonymous with an Achilles’ heel—the one weakness of an otherwise invulnerable hero.”–Wikipedia; which gives Batman and Batgirl an advantage over the super strong kryptonians, which would be completely weakened by the kryptonite. Now all superheroes have some weakness but Superman’s weakness is very well known. On the other hand Batman’s weakness is the fact that he is human.

Superman vs. Wonder Woman

In this video Wonder Woman completely defeats Superman in a hand to hand fight. She does not use any of Superman’s weakness just her fighting skills and her lasso.

Superman VS. Wonder Woman

Now the counter to Wonder Woman defeating Superman, as a female beating a male in a fight would be a male beating a female which happens when Green Lantern fights Star Sapphire, but this is not a fight of strength but a fight of power.

Green Lantern vs. Star Sapphire

Green Lantern VS. Star Sapphire

In the video above, Green Lantern fights his enemy and lover Star Sapphire and he wins. Their fight doesn’t involve hand to hand combat but a fight of Green Lantern’s Power Ring verses Star Sapphire’s “Zamaron star sapphire“, which is her power source, much like Green Lantern’s Power Ring.

Jean Grey VS. Professor X

In this Video, It shows Jean Grey aka Phoenix completely destroys a house along with Professor X. Professor X does not fight back because he is trying to help Jean retake control of her powers. Even though she ends up killing him, he dies with a smile on his fast. This is not a good example of female versus male in a fight because he does not fight back. He tries helping her, this shows the compassion heroes have. This is a good example of how powerful some of Marvel’s superheroines are, she killed him without touching.

When it comes to intelligence between Wonder Woman and Batman, they both have genius level intellect. When WDW  was asked which one is smarter they said “Both have pretty much Genius level intellect. If you mean who is the quicker learner than Diana has Bruce beat pretty easily. She can learn languages and advanced concepts in a matter of hours. If you mean who is the most creative with knowledge than Bruce has Diana beat.”–Comic Vine. I agree that there are different ways to use intelligence, being smart is not enough it is how you use the smarts.

Due to the fact that superheroine movies in the past have not been very good, movie makers have steered clear from them for years. Even recently superheroines have come forward to be more famous in recent years but they are still played second to male leads, like Black Widow to the rest of The Avengers and in the movie Iron Man 2 she was played second to Nick Fury and Tony Stark. Black Widow could carry her own movie about her mysterious back story before The Avengers with lots of action scenes. I think that would make a good movie with Hawkeye, and Nick Fury taking a backseat to her.

Another thing that comes in to play when it comes to superheroine movies is the thought that women don’t pay to see superheroine movies.   “There is an argument often made that women don’t go to comic book movies. If that were true, how can we explain the fiscal successes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Box office records are not broken by men going on their own. Women make up more than 50 per cent of the population of the world, and whether the studios like it or not, their cash is contributing to those figures. Whoever is in charge of what gets made in movieland may not like the facts, but that doesn’t change them.”–Rachael Kates. This point contradicts the idea that females don’t watch comic book movies, when done right I’m sure that both genders will go see these superheroine movies.  Unfortunately, that has not happened yet but maybe soon it will there are rumors of a Wonder Woman movie that will hopefully happen and be made well enough to bring about more superheroine movies.

Marvels-Avengers-the-avengers-

So, when it comes to girls vs. boys in terms of superheroes, there is no clear winner. There are places where superheroines can step up and places where superheroes can take a step back to make them more equal.  Movie makers need to make more live-action superheroine movies for all the girls out there. They should also make them better. Young girls want superheroines to look up to just as much as young boys want superheroes to look up to.

Superheroines vs. Superheroes

Enough about the boys, it is time for some Girl power.

female superheroesAs a girl, female superheroes are very important to me, because it gives me someone to look up to even though it is not super realistic; I mean you never hear Wonder Woman talk about her period. Superheroines are female superheroes as opposed to superheroes that are male, but the word “superheroes” is often used for both genders. I think that there should be more female superheroes that are independent from men like Black Canary and Huntress. Superheroes like Batgirl and Supergirl are second to their counterparts Batman and Superman; in fact there are many superheroines that get their identity from a superhero counterpart, most times a male counterpart. For example Supergirl from Superman, Batwoman and Batgirl from Batman, Aquagirl from Aquaman, Iron Woman from Iron Man, and there are many more in this link. A lot of superheroines are sidekicks to a male counterpart or take on an identity for a friend. Most superheroines are not very famous though, there is one superheroine that most everyone knows and that is Wonder Woman.

Wonder_Woman_0012

There are very few superheroine movies compared to the amount of superhero movies. Most superheroine movies were made a long time ago, when there was not as much technology to make the special effects needed for a good action movie. Some superheroine movies that were made are Supergirl made in 1984, Catwoman in 2004, and Elektra in 2005, while the most recent Superman movies was in 2013. With superhero movies they are mainly remakes of a superhero that already has their own movie for example Batman and Superman, both have older version and newer version. There is not much variety when it comes to superhero and superheroine movies. Not all superhero movies are successful, which is why film makers tend to stick to the most successful superheroes to make movies about.

“Toymakers will tell you they won’t sell enough, and movie people will point to the two terrible superheroine movies that were made and say, You see? It can’t be done. It’s stupid, and I’m hoping “The Hunger Games” will lead to a paradigm shift. It’s frustrating to me that I don’t see anybody developing one of these movies. It actually pisses me off. My daughter watched “The Avengers” and was like, “My favorite characters were the Black Widow and Maria Hill,” and I thought, Yeah, of course they were. I read a beautiful thing Junot Diaz wrote: “If you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves.'”–Joss Whedon director and writer of Marvel’s The Avengers. Agrees that there needs to be more superheroine movies, especially for young girls like Whedon’s daughter.

The Avengers Head Count

X-Men ladies like Jean Grey, Storm, and Rogue could also helm a solo movie, but instead, Wolverine is getting his second (despite the fact that X-Men Origins: Wolverine was, most critics and viewers agree, terrible)….Why is it that Green Lantern can get a movie, Batman and Superman can have a veritable avalanche of sequels and reboots, and yet Wonder Woman the most noted female hero of them all leaves a gaping hole in the DC film canon?”–Rachael Kates, like most fans she wants a superheroine movie too. Women do go to superhero movies and they make up about half of the sales for those movies, which Kates also points out in her post.

Some issues that I will be brought up in the next post are which is better superheroines or superheroes? and Which is stronger, smart, more violent, and more protective? Why do male superheroes get their own movie more than female superheroes?

Marvel vs DC

Marvel and DC are two of the main types of comics. Both have been around for a long time and have a big following. DC comics has been around since 1934 and is owned by Time Warner. DC comics is the rival of Marvel who is owned by The Walt Disney company, has been around since 1939.

Marvel_vs_Dc-580x4361

In 1996, Marvel comics and DC made 4 issues called Marvel Comics versus DC and called DC versus Marvel Comics. These comics are a series of comic book crossovers were voted on by fans to decide how each story would go. Was this a good idea? Yes, in my opinion it was a good idea to bring two rival comics together and have the fans involved, to get the story and characters the way both fan groups would like it. Fans of both comics would like this because it answers the question, what would happen if Superman meet Hulk or if Storm meet Catwoman? That is why I like this, and I think they should make a movie of these comics.

“The story had an “out of universe” component in that, although there were eleven primary battles, five outcomes were determined by fan vote.[3]

The six primary battles were:dc-vs-marvel comic#4

  • Aquaman (DC) vs. Namor (Marvel)
  • Elektra (Marvel) vs. Catwoman (DC)
  • Flash (DC) vs. Quicksilver (Marvel)
  • Robin (DC) vs. Jubilee (Marvel)
  • Silver Surfer (Marvel) vs. Green Lantern (DC)
  • Thor (Marvel) vs. Captain Marvel (DC).

There were five battles in which the outcomes were determined by the votes of fans:

  • Batman (DC) vs. Captain America (Marvel)
  • Spider-Man (Marvel) vs. Superboy (DC)
  • Wolverine (Marvel) vs. Lobo (DC)
  • Storm (Marvel) vs. Wonder Woman (DC)
  • Superman (DC) vs. Hulk (Marvel).”– Wikipedia

Marvel comics and DC have worked together but they are also rivals going head to head in the box office multiple times for example this summer with the release of Marvel’s Iron Man 3 just weeks before the release of DC’s Man of Steel.

“According to Bloomberg, Marvel’s comic book films have generated 47% more revenue than DC’s. Marvel, now owned by Disney (DIS), has also produced more films than its rival. Marvel properties have been featured in 28 films in the past 15 years, compared to 23 films in 35 years for DC, a Time Warner (TWX) subsidiary. The average gross for Marvel’s films is $190 million — far better than DC’s $129 million average.” —Adam Benjamin

One reason for Marvel comics making more money off their movies than DC is because “(Marvel *cough* and their *cough* movies *cough*, while DC movies *cough* suck balls that make them cough *cough* up pubic hairballs *cough*).” —Cracked.com. This is only one websites opinion, others prefer Superman to Marvel’s story lines.

Marvel comics has brought us many superhero groups such as The Fantastic Four, The Avengers, X-Men, and others. Marvel has been bring these super-groups to the big screen in live action movies. One being The Avengers Movie, which brought together characters that had been established in their own movies like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. While the rest of The Avengers showed up in their movies has cameos or supporting roles like Black Widow, Nick Fury, and Hawkeye.   Another Marvel super-group to make live action movies are the X-Men, which have another movie coming out in 2014 and work is happening on the next Avengers movie that should be out in 2015. Marvel also recently released the third Iron Man movie starring Robert Downey Jr.

Christian Bale(Batman) and Robert Downey Jr(Iron Man)

DC has been busy too recently releasing Man of Steel, the newest Superman movie. There has been lots of talk of a Justice League movie. Similar to the Avengers movie bring together established characters in one movie. The recent Batman from The Dark Knight movies played by Christian Bale might be part of the Justice League along with the Man of Steel, Superman played by Henry Cavill and The Green Lantern done by Ryan Reynolds.

There have been debates over who has the best superheroes, Marvel or DC. Personally I have favorites on both sides.  Both tend to focus on superheroes in the United States. Superman has roots in Kansas, Batman is in Gotham a fake american city, and The Fantastic Four and Iron Man are both in New York.

Superheroes are looked up to no matter if they are Marvel or DC, if they have superpowers or not, people love them. Some people go as far as becoming a superhero by putting on a costume, others watch the movies and TV shows, or read the comic books.
